Artificial intelligence (AI) is slowly integrating itself into our society. Most people use it daily to help with schoolwork, make funny videos, or even help manage businesses. The environmental impact of AI is nothing short of surprising. Super computers in massive company HQs expend thousands of gallons of water a day to stay cool, which may cause problems in the future, such as drought or water scarcity, if AI usage continues growing at this rapid rate. Moreover, these gigantic AI systems consume enormous amounts of energy, leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions. Frighteningly, the problem shows no signs of stopping, and studies show that AI will contribute up to 14% of all greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.


Not only that but upgrading and engineering better AI systems releases tons of electronic waste, which cannot simply be disposed by normal means because it contains lots of toxic elements like mercury and lead. These could pose major health hazards for both people and wildlife if they are not handled properly.


Fortunately, AI researchers are aware of these unintended consequences and are working to make AI more sustainable. If you use AI frequently, you should cut back on utilizing it for unnecessary tasks like generating videos or asking it questions that have readily available answers.
