Nature's Unexpected Cleanup Crew

Some fungi can digest crude oil, pesticides, and other harmful substances, turning toxic pollution into benign byproducts. This is the basis of a process called mycoremediation, which is the use of fungi to break down or absorb contaminants in an ecosystem. This form of bioremediation has been applied to oil spills, industrial pollution, and even certain plastics.

For example, in the rainforests of Ecuador, mycoremediation has been used to treat pollution left behind by hundreds of abandoned oil wells. Without the use of fungi, leftover crude oil would have had to be incinerated, a slow and energy-intensive process. The appeal of mycoremediation is how it's interwoven into the natural world, providing a clean, harmless solution to combat pollution. Thanks to their non-specific enzymes, fungi are able to decompose a myriad of different materials. Interestingly, they are one of the only organisms able to break down wood, and that powerful decomposition ability extends to pollutants too.
Mycoremediation proves to be cost-effective too. In one European trial, the fungal cleanup cost under 75 euros per cubic meter of soil, against more than 100 euros for standard thermal treatmentand used roughly 90 percent less energy.
So why isn't this everywhere? The main reason is that it's slow. Many countries, including the US, have imposed regulations that demand quick cleanups, but fungi need time to grow. The urgency of addressing a crisis is also a key reason why mycoremediation isn't ubiquitous. Pollution-causing disasters, like oil spills, need to be attacked as quickly as possible to minimize environmental impact, so using fungi isn't ideal.
Regardless, the way mycoremediation works seamlessly with the environment is nothing short of promising. With more research into how fungi interact with pollutants, mycoremediation could prove to be a key player in cleaning up our planet.
