Around the World: UAE's Cloud Seeding

Hello Earth Lovers! As most of us already know, the world is teeming with breakthrough technologies that are reshaping both our environment and our futures. From the Americas to Asia to places few have even heard of, incredible innovators break boundaries to tackle environmental issues in bold, imaginative ways. In our series Around the World, we will spotlight a specific country and some of the amazing technology found there that impacts our planet in creative, intriguing ways.

In this post, we'll travel to the United Arab Emirates, an urban oasis in the dry Arabian desert, to see how they are combating their endless drought that prevents agricultural industries from expanding further into the desert.

Cloud seeding is a technique in which scientists implant particles, specifically silver iodide, into clouds to trigger artificial rainfall, giving humans the ability to influence the weather. Even though some see being able to control the weather as a wild fantasy or some sort of conspiracy theory, the UAE is breaking boundaries to compete with the relentless aridness of the desert.

As cloud seeding continues to be a growing source of interest among the general public, many wonder about some of the long-term impacts of artificially releasing chemicals into the atmosphere. Many environmentalists argue that humans are playing the role of a god by inducing rainfall and urge that we return control to nature before more problems arise. So that raises the question, are these short-term benefits really worth it in the long term? Should cloud seeding be halted so that more research can be conducted to test its safety?

Looking towards the future of cloud seeding, the UAE announced that it is exploring ways to identify a cloud's seeding potential to increase rainfall, sending waves through much of the community. Luckily, the UAE has addressed some of the public's concerns and says they will be exploring more eco-friendly and safer catalysts to be used in future cloud seeding missions

Although cloud seeding is controversial, it is still nothing short of an extraordinary environmental technology that has the potential to reshape our world. I am curious, though, what are your thoughts on cloud seeding? Feel free to send me an email or comment! Also, I'm going on vacation to Italy for a few weeks so expect a post on that when I get back. Until next time Earth lovers!
